Gov. Schwarzenegger and Republican lawmakers unveiled sweeping legislation Tuesday that would require convicted sex offenders to be tracked by a satellite surveillance system for life.
Under the bill, sex offenders also could not live within 2,000 feet of a school.
Riverside County Deputy District Attorney Rod Pacheco said he and several state GOP lawmakers have been asking Schwarzenegger to help lead efforts to toughen penalties for sex offenders.
"I am glad the governor has joined the fight. This is definitely going to make a difference," Pacheco said.
